Five young artists, one message: we need clean air!

Our first-ever ‘Kids for Clean Air’ Art competition wrapped up at the end of June with almost 300 incredible entries from children across Lambeth and Southwark!

The competition invited local children to champion clean air and draw a design that would get people thinking and talking about air pollution and why it matters to kids. We were blown away by the response, and it took us many hours to go through all the beautiful artwork to choose five winners and two runners-up.

The five brilliant winners are: Mina from Elm Wood Primary School, Amelia from Rosendale Primary School, Sehajroop fromSt James’ CE Primary School, Rayhanah from Glenbrook Primary School and Luna from Streatham Wells Primary School. They all received brand new scooters generously donated by Micro, who made sure each winner got the exact colour that they wanted.

The wonderful runners-up, Ezekiel from Ilderton Primary School and Fatima from Iqra Primary School, won vouchers for Beginner Skateboarding lessons, donated by School of Skate. Many thanks to both Micro and School of Skate for their support.

On top of this, the winning designs are about to be featured on lamppost banners for a whole year - they’re going up as we speak on some of South London’s busiest streets! 

Morley College collaboration

Mums for Lungs were thrilled to partner with Morley College on this project. Six art and graphic design students joined our Schools Lead Anna at Elm Wood Primary School in June to run workshops to inspire pupils and help them with their designs. The children loved having the art students there, and the students had a great time (despite the noise of 50 kids in one room!). 

These students, and more from their cohort, then took on the challenge of getting the winning designs ready to become banners, working hard to enhance the designs to make them bright and bold whilst keeping their integrity. We can’t wait to see the finished banners in place, and we’re very grateful for the generous support of Project Centre (part of Marston Holdings), who have enabled us to get these designs up for an entire year.

Mums for Lungs’ schools work

As the Schools Lead for Mums for Lungs, Anna’s role focuses on getting school communities talking about air pollution and the need for cleaner air, and she thoroughly enjoyed visiting the winners’ schools to drop off their prizes. We’re grateful to local councillors Eloise Waldon-Day and Jacqui Bond, who came to some of the schools to help Anna give out prizes and certificates in assemblies — they were both so impressed with the winning designs.
